Some Serious Bragging -
but not about how much
by Sue Nuttall
Braggin' Rights were on the line in the 2003 Gold Runner Challenge for the
Burris Circle Tour - and the line was a very a thin one. Nick Chiapetta,
from Downers Grove, Illinois held off a surge from four other drivers to win
the 25-lap feature event in high profile race.
Chiapetta was hot all day. He started strong with a qualifying effort
second only to Adam Carlson. He then went on to beat the field in a short
4-lap dash. And finally, led the feature from start to finish.
The dashes, always a crowd favorite boast passing in every lap. Chiapetta
won, while Jordan Thiel, Zach Axlen, Billy Hulbert, Mason Hadley and Adam Carlson
finished in 2nd through 6th. The second Dash Group saw Nick Beinlich, last year's
Purple Shootout winner in victory lane. Top finishers in this dash were Nick Miller,
Tyler Middleton, Scotty Thiel and Carly Mandarino.
Chiapetta had to work at it to earn the right to brag about his feature win.
Jordan Thiel was drafting right behind Chiapetta and pulled to the inside on
the last straight a way. The drivers were running side by side and Thiel
had the momentum. Then in the last few yards, Chiapetta got wings and
sailed across the finish line - a victory of inches. The action right behind the leaders
was intense. Bill Hulbert, Mason Hadley, Zach Axlen, Nick Beinlich, Tyler Middleton
and Adam Carlson were all in a block 2 wide, 3 deep. When Hulbert, Hadley, Axlen and
Beinlich blocked to protect their lines against each other, a lane opened low and Tyler
Middleton dove right for it, picking up 3 spots in the last 100 yard. Adam Carlson
followed him through, improving his finishing position by 2 spots. The top 5 were
Chiapetta, Jordan Thiel, Billy Hulbert, Tyler Middleton and Mason Hadley.
Jordan Thiel retains his overall BCT Series Points lead and Billy Hulbert is close behind
in second place.
The Jr. Sportsman Champ Kart class was quite a show today with the top 4
finishing within ½ second of each other. Dylan Barbosa was the early
leader. Then last week's, Jr. Champ Kart Classic winner, Jacob Zellmer took
the top spot until lap 14. The battle in the last 1/8th of a mile had
Colton Clevenger using the new asphalt to hold the line to the outside and
swing around the others to steal the victory. Barbosa went low to finish
second, Zellmer held on for third and Rachel Pinkerman had an outstanding
race for the final podium position. Mackenzie Piller, George Clos and Ben
Hewitt also turned in excellent performances.
Highlight performances in the other classes were turned in by:
· Brad Becker with his first feature award in Sr. Champ Karts
· Alex Stumpf - winning in Jr. 1 and taking the lead in the Jr. 1 points
battle
· Rich McGill a double winner in Sr. Lite and Sr. Medium
· Matt Vice winning his 3rd feature of the year in Jr. Champs
· Austin Hintt's 4th feature of the year in the Kid Karts
· Amy Ghislain win in Sr. Heavy
· Joe Chiapetta victory to strengthen his lead in Sr. Sportsman

ROCK ISLAND GRAND PRIX AWARDED FIA/CIK
INTERNATIONAL LICENSE
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The Rock Island Grand Prix street race is the first and
only internationally-licensed kart race in the United States in 2003. The
licensing announcement was made jointly by the Rock Island Grand Prix, the Automobile
Competition Committee for the United States (ACCUS), the
World Karting Association, and the Commission Internationale de Karting
(CIK).
The announcement is the culmination of a lengthy effort to bring international
racing to Rock Island, Illinois, located on the Mississippi River west of
Chicago. The CIK, with headquarters in Switzerland, is the karting arm of the
Federation International de L'Automobile (FIA) which governs auto racing worldwide. The
Charlotte-based World Karting Association is the largest
sanctioning body for kart racing in the United States.
Beginning with this year's races, August 30-31, 2003, the Rock Island Grand
Prix will feature CIK Intercontinental C and Intercontinental A races in
addition to a full slate of American kart classes. The Rock Island Grand Prix
will be listed on the international race calendar as an International Restricted
event. This will allow CIK-licensed foreign racers to also race in the non-CIK classes.
The license application was filed through ACCUS with the assistance of Randy Kugler,
president of the WKA, and Burdette Martin, national
sporting authority for the FIA in the United States.
``We are happy to have an event like this,'' Martin said, adding that the CIK
would like to see more international races in the United States. ``We are
anxious to see this event come off well.''
Kugler played a key roll in working the application through the process,
including track inspection, national approval and, finally, granting of the
international license.
``Rock Island has succeeded in bringing the karting event to the people. WKA
is excited to be a part of the Rock Island Grand Prix experience. Promoting
karting to the masses can only help grow the sport,'' Kugler said.
Roger Ruthhart, president of the Rock Island Grand Prix, said that opening
the door to international competition seemed to be a logical next step, given
the race's history.
``This race started out nine years ago as a means for businesses in Rock Island
to attract tourists to the popular Downtown Rock Island Arts & Entertainment District.
During that time we have hosted drivers and spectators from throughout the United States
and several foreign countries. We have created one of the premier karting events in the
world. It is time to welcome more
foreign race teams and let them discover what the American racers have
enjoyed for some time. That is made easier by becoming CIK-approved and
listed on its international race calendar,'' Ruthhart said. Rock Island will
continue to renew its license in the years to come, he said.
Rock Island is located in an area known as the Quad-Cities on the Mississippi
River where it intersects with Interstate Highways 80, 88, 280 and 74. The
area has a population of 375,000 and welcomes karters with open arms. The
Quad-Cities features three riverboat casinos and a great variety of
entertainment and attractions. The Rock Island Grand Prix is held in a
temporary circuit constructed through the downtown city streets. SBC
Communications and Bi-State Home Improvement are the Presenting
Sponsors and Jumer's Casino Rock Island is sponsor of the race's $25,000
purse. Kart Expo International, one of the largest karting trade shows in the
world, is also a major sponsor. The race draws over 400 race entries and more
than 30,000 spectators.
Information on this exciting motorsports event is available on the internet at
www.rockislandgrandprix.com . Call the
Grand Prix office at (309) 292-8133
or email grandprix@qconline.com for race and
entry information./

Rain, Rain, Go Away...
Here is
the type weather we have been having at Mahoning Valley Speedway, in Lehighton, Pa. as well as a lot of other
Speedways.
Even the
best drainage system that was installed at the track a few years back could not handle
mother nature.
Lets see
now for the month of May 2003, we had twenty-two days of rain or some participation. Eight
days of cloud cover with a threat of rain, and one day of Sunshine. Temps never made it
over 75 degree's for May.
For the
month of June so far, and we are in the 23rd day of the month. we have had 20 days of
rain, or some participation. Two days of scattered showers and one day of Sunshine. Note
today if the first day the sun has been out and its now 80 degree's.
When
this picture was taken by our track photographer Bob Snyder Photography on Sat. June 21, 2003 at 3pm. The Lehigh Valley and Pocono area just received
between four and five inches of rainfall the day and night before according to TV, and
newspaper accounts.
The area
received about eight or so inches of rainfall over three days. Can it get better? We sure
do hope so.
On
Monday June 23rd
2003, at 1130 am I
spoke with Matt McDade who raced our speedway and now lives in Houston Texas. He stated the temp today at lunch
time is 105 degree's and has not rained in a few days. They expect the Temps to remain in
that area for another week.
Racers
and promoters there are complaining its to hot. I guess we could use some temps in
between. But better yet, just a weekend without rain would do the racing community a lot
of good.

Jason Lynch Debuts Kart in
Victory at Sr. Champ Kart Classic
Story by: Sue Nuttall
The Nortown Automotive Sr. Champ Kart Classic attracted new and veteran
racers alike as the Burris Circle Tour made its fifth stop of the season at the Illiana
Motor Speedway. Jason Lynch, who started racing with the Burris Circle Tour from
it's inception a decade ago, returned to circuit and took home the big trophy. Jason
introduced a new kart that he designed and built himself and after a few laps getting it
dialed in, he ran to a resounding
victory.
A few seconds back, Jacob Finney and rookie driver, Brad Becker were mixing it up,
swapping spots on almost every turn. Jacob finished second and Brad was thrilled
with his best finish ever in third place. Aaron Phillips was the top qualifier with
18.625 seconds around the 1/4 mile, and Nicole Phillips at 18.804 seconds. Julie
Hellyer, in her first race said, "I had
the time of my life. I need to do this again."
A pack of Jr. Champ kart drivers including Brian Freiberg, Matt Scott, Michael Bilderback,
Ryan Marshall and Matt Vice ran out to an early lead. Bilderback spun, so he was suddenly
out of contention. Ryan Marshall slipped by Matt Vice and Matt Scott was taking the
fast way around on the preferred inside line. With one lap to go, the top 3 were in a dead
heat. Ryan held on for his first feature win of the year. Matt Vice is leading the
points race with 860 points - only 20 points over Bilderback and Marshall who are tied for
second at 840 points.
In the Jr. Sportsman Champ class, Dylan Barbosa led through the halfway mark. Then he and
Colton Clevenger got together and went to the back leaving the field open for Tyler Blume.
He jumped out to a commanding lead, crossing the stripe in first place. The
win put Tyler atop the leader board for the
Class Overall Series Points Championship. Mackenzie Piller and George Clos, Jr.
rounded out the podium in second and third respectively.
In Sr. Briggs action, the Sr. Medium's turned in another close finish. After running nose
to tail most of the race, Brandon Eash, Ryan Rockhold and Anthony Danta spread out 3 wide
coming in the final turn and finished with less than 2/10ths of a second separating them.
This week Eash took home the honors, Rockhold finished second and Danta was third.
The Sr. Heavy class was almost a repeat of the Medium's. Eash and Danta doubled up and ran
away from the rest of the Sr. Heavy field. These two experienced drivers had to
weave their way through lapped traffic at the end of the race. Danta finished on top and
Eash was second.
Shane Morrisey led the Sr. Lite Feature from start to finish. With 2 laps to go,
Rick Johnson made a slick inside pass to take over the second spot. He barely held on
coming down the final backstretch. Rich McGill settled for third and Jeff Everts finished
fourth.
Not to be outdone, the largest Jr. 2 class of the season took to the track with Matt
O'Leary on the pole. In the early going O'Leary was in the lead while Tyler
Peterson, Ben Stumpf and Dylan Hobbs chased him down. With 9 laps down, a yellow flag
bunched the field back up with O'Leary still leading and Stumpf right on his bumper.
Dylan Hobbs made a charge to the
outside but got in the marbles close to the wall and fell back a few spots. The final
stretch was a thriller as Tyler Peterson went all the way to the wall and made the turn at
the last possible moment. At the checker it was O'Leary, Stumpf, Hobbs and Peterson.
Other feature winners this week included Seth Lootans in his first victory of the year in
the Sr. Yamaha Class. Joe Chiapetta mastered the tight turns to earn his first
feature win of the year in the Sr. Sportsman class. Jessica Brannham - Jr. Yamaha, Derrick
Gough - Jr. 1 Lite and Billy Hulbert - Jr. 3 Lite won their respective classes.
Tiffany Wester and Chris Lishamer finished 1-2 in the F200.

AYDEN, NC-A new
sponsor was just the shot in the arm Jimmy (JL) Furrow needed to net a trio of WKA Eagle
trophies Saturday June 14 at Southern Pitt Raceway during the WKA Crane Cams
Grand Nationals where 858 racers came to compete for bonus points towards their national
rankings. Piloting a Larry Ransone Racing
backed Eddie Mishue Racing Engines powered Olimpic karts, Furrow, of Rocky Mount, VA,
found victory lane from the pole in Prowler Racing Chassis Briggs Senior Champ,
PEC/Jrs Trim Shop Briggs Medium and Trick/Olimpic Briggs Lite.
Furrow spun a 15.194 seconds lap for Senior Champs pole and
quickly took the features early lead with Chuck Broadway close behind. Broadway grabbed the lead from him on lap three and
headed the 30-racer field until they were given the three laps to go signal. Furrow powered past Broadway bringing defending
national champion Jody Miller, of Salisbury, NC, with him in time to take the white flag. At the stripe Furrow owned a narrow 0.098 seconds
edge over Miller for his first ever Grand National win.
It was exciting and tough, explained Furrow, whos
last national win was at Dayton in 1995. Champ
buggies are always tough, I want to thank Eddie Mishue for the motor, Marc Mode with
Olimpic karts and Andy Murray for a great setup and tire choice and Larry Ransone for
giving me the opportunity to ride his stuff. Im
the type that likes to be out front, so I took it back and did the best I could. I sat on the pole at Baker in the last national,
but I didnt win there.
A 14.710 seconds lap earned him Briggs Mediums pole from where
he turned in a perfect performance that ended 3.824 seconds ahead of double winner Jamie
Knopf. Furrow rocketed off the pole and was
never seriously challenged on his way to a second Grand National win.
I love it! he beamed after his second victory, I
cant thank enough people. Andy Murray,
hes the man, and Eddie Mishue, Marc Mode, and Larry Ransone; if it werent for
them I wouldnt be here, Im just a wheel holder.
The kart handled good and the motor was great, you cant beat Eddie
Mishues motors. Im just happy to
be here.
Later that night Furrow poised himself for a second wire-to-wire win
with a 14.804 seconds lap for Briggs Lites pole.
When the green flag waved Furrow flew ahead of the field and was quickly
catching the racers in the rear. Brett Miller
fought his way from a ninth place start and was closing in on Furrow in the final lap, but
trailed him by 0.389 seconds under the checkered flag.
Knopf and Tony Belk were double Grand National winners that weekend. Knopf made his Animal debut in style battling from
a third place start to top ARC Briggs Animal Heavys 16-racer field with a 1.213
finish line advantage over pole winner Jody Davidson who turned a 14.280 seconds lap for
the premier starting position. Knopf shot into
the early lead and held off Davison for 20-laps.
It takes a few laps and then it come in pretty good and I got
by them pretty clean, described Knopf, of Lancaster, SC who pilots a Performance
Racing Engines powered Shadow Racing Chassis. I
never run the new Animal before. Id like
to thank my dad for getting all of my sponsors for me this weekend and thank Cracker
Barrel of Greenville, NC, Days Inn, Cool Power Extremes, Ryans, Outback Steak
House and Thor Racing Glass. Id also
like to thank everybody at Performance Karting and Rick Little Graphics.
Knopf earned his second win that Sunday with a 1.890 seconds finish
line advantage over A. J. Miller in Dixie Karting/Southern Karting Briggs Super Stock. Davidson, the pole winner with a 13.936
seconds lap, hustled into the early lead and then surrendered the front to Knopf in turn
one after leading the 16-racer field the first two laps.
Knopf opened his lead while Miller, Dee Paschal and Davidson scrapped over
second place.
It was great, Knopf said.
We used the same setup we had last night, the sun went down and the
track was a little slicker last night, but the track had more bite today so the kart
didnt as long to come in. I want to
thank everybody that helped me, Rick Little Graphic, Jeremy Morris for staying up till
about four oclock this morning working on my kart and I want to thank my dad for all
of his help and support and I want to dedicate this win to my grandfather who passed away
when we were at Daytona.
Belk bagged his wins that Saturday starting with RLV Tuned Exhaust
Products Briggs Senior where he grabbed the early lead from the outside pole over pole
winner John Fowler, who clocked a 14.836 seconds lap for the top starting spot, and went
on to lead the 22-racer field through the races only restart before beating Donnie
Sellers to the stripe with a comfortable 3.005 seconds cushion.
That caution worried me a little bit, Belk, of China
Grove, NC, admitted. I didnt know how
far they were behind me. I had a guy over
there telling me where they was at, but it all worked out in the end. I knew I had a big lead, but I wasnt letting
up. The Phantom kart was great and Tod
Millers motor was awesome.
Belks second win came later that night in Southern Express Kart
Shop, Inc. Briggs Super Heavy where he started on the outside of front row next to Fowler
again, When the green flag waved Belk blasted into a never surrendered lead to the end
where he was 0.318 seconds faster then Lonnie Dawson.

PECORARI AND RAHAL DOUBLE AT TRANE MOTOR SPEEDWAY

-#26-Robbie Pecorari leads the way in ICA

-#9-Kyle Rahal leads #9-Nick Evans in 80cc Shifter Junior
Story and Photos by Bruce
C. Walls
Norway,
IL-Robbie Pecorari and Kyle Rahal were double winners at Trane Motor Speedway in Norway,
IL June 6-8 during the George Kugler Manufacturers Cup Series presented by
Bridgestone Bumper to Bumper Auto Parts Nationals where close to 400 racers from the US
and Canada competed on the 5/8-mile 12-turn road course that was dry on Saturday and wet
Sunday.
Pecorari, an Anton, PA based Biesse kart pilot, turned a 43.478
seconds lap for the pole in Saturdays Streeter Super Stands ICC-1 from where he
ruled the Pre Final and Final with perfection taking the Finals checkered flag with
a 3.424 seconds advantage over Jamie Sieracki after leading the14-racer field through a
lap three red flag restart.
The Biesse kart was real hooked up before the red flag and then
during the red flag we noticed the kart wasnt working because we didnt have
any fluid left in the clutch so we were hoping it wasnt a standing start,
Pecorari described. We got lucky, it was
a rolling start and then I had to get by (Brian) Jacobsen.
The Biesse kart was handling perfect and the J&J motor was great.
Sundays Bridgestone/Grand Products ICA was a different story
with Pecorari and Tony Loniewski battling side-by-side on the final lap in a steady rain. Pecorari got a nose on Loniewski at the stripe and
took the win by 0.710 seconds. A 44.048
seconds lap earned Pecorari the pole and he beat Troy Hintzsche in the Pre Final with a
comfortable 4.340 seconds cushion.
Coming out from the start we had to wait for the kart to come
in and it started coming in and I noticed I was catching him (Loniewski). On the last lap we were racing hard and it was a
great last lap, Pecorari described. I
just dove under him (Loniewski) going into the straight and he came back. The kart was fabulous in the rain. It was determination
and a lot of rain practice. Without
any rain practice youre not going to do anything in the rain.
Rahal dominated both 80cc
Shifter classes with huge leads at the stripe. Saturday
the 16-year-old Glen-Ellyn, IL based Birel factory pilot blistered the track with a 44.035
seconds lap for J&J Racing/Biesse 80cc Shifter 1s pole. He beat Patrick Winninger to the finish in the Pre
Final by 3.463 seconds followed by another perfect run in the Final where he was 4.985
seconds ahead of Daniel Morad.
The kart was working great, Rahal reported after his
first win. I want to thank Tim Lobaugh,
I couldnt have done it without him, MRP theyre just awesome, the kart was
working great, it hooked up everywhere. I just
drove hard looked back and I was out there. The
motor worked great, we have a great engine program, Rays done an excellent job and I
cant thank him enough.
Sunday Rahal ruled Abbale/Lee Motorsports 80cc Final with a huge
6.927 seconds advantage over Donnie Bussell after having trouble in the Pre Final where he
was seventh across the stripe.
I made a little mistake in the Pre Final and spun out and we
make a handling change and it worked a lot better, Rahal explained. I had a great start, charged to the front and
won. It takes practice, practice, practice;
weve done a lot of practicing this year. I
want to thank MRP, Tim Lobaugh and everybody that helped, I couldnt have done it
without all of them.
A total of 20 classes competed that weekend. The full story and
additional photos will appear in an upcoming issue of WKAs Karting Scene. To subscribe visit the WKA web site at www.worldkarting.com or call the office at

Burris Circle Tour Duels with Mother
Nature and Fights to a Draw
Story by: Sue Nuttall
The Midwest's rainy weather dominated the racing scene as the Burris Circle Tour returned
to Lake Geneva Raceway on June 8th. Highlights of the rain-shortened event included
a 3-way battle in Sr. Medium, the first points race for the popular Kid Kart Class and a
tight last lap dash in Sr. Champs. The Sr. Medium Class got off to an exciting start when
Kris McCarty lost a tire coming out of turn 3. The tire went bouncing into the corn
and Kris hung on in a nifty spin. On the restart Ryan Rockhold took the lead, then
swapped with Brandon Eash. Coming down the final stretch, Rockhold, Eash and Eric
Freiberg were racing side-by-side. The total difference at the stripe was less than
4/100ths of a second with Freiberg winning, Rockhold-second and Eash in third. In
the second heat 2 lead changes in the
last 2 laps had the crowd on their feet. Eash had been leading with Rockhold
drafting. On the outside lane, Freiberg and McCarty were paired up. Then Eash
and Freiberg focused on each other, leaving a lane to the inside. McCarty dove down
to take the lead and Rockhold followed her through. Eash settled for third and
Freiberg finished fourth (still less than 1 second behind).

Three new Kid Kart drivers made their rookie debuts at the Burris Circle Tour this week.
Cory Talaska, Jacob Van Wazer and Thaddeus Malosh all had an exciting day as the Kid Karts
joined the points race. Austin Hintt got off to a fast start, while Morgan Schissel
had to chase him down. Schissel took
over the lead in lap 3 and never looked back. Hintt held on for second place,
Elliott Prichett and Talaska rounded out the podium. Other Kid Kart competitors
included Trevor Kelly, Jordon Jageleski, Brennan Frisby, Joshua James and Jimmy Ryan.
Aaron Phillips and Jacob Finney split the Sr. Champ races with a victory each. In
the first round Jacob Finney won a tight one as he held off last lap challenges from
Nicole and Aaron Phillips. In the second race, Aaron took a narrow lead, but had to
fend off multiple challenges from sister Nicole. Brad Becker made his way from back
in the pack to pass Finney on the last corner.

Also in Victory Lane this week was Tiffany Wester - F200, Cody Daul - Jr. 1 Lite, Dylan
Hobbs - Jr. 2 Lite, Adam Carlson - Jr. 3 Lite, Michael Bilderback - Jr. Champ, Tyler Blume
- Jr. Sportsman Champ, Jessica Brannam - Jr. Yamaha, Brandon Eash - Sr. Heavy, Richard
McGill - Sr. Lite, Dean Daul -
Sr. Sportsman and Eric Freiberg - Yamaha Sportsman.
The next race for the Burris Circle Tour is schedule for June 22nd at Illinana Motor
Speedway. The feature event is the Nortown Automotive Sr. Champ Kart Classic.
Gates open at 8:30 am.
